Ancient Greek Government

  1. The United States today has a representative democracy while Ancient Greece had a direct democracy. A prominent characteristic of a direct democracy is living by majority rule, everyone actively participates in decision making, which can seem beneficial at face value. However that is very impractical today, as we have busy lives and voting on every single issue would be a hassle. Therefore, representative democracy arose which is characterized by elected people voting on the issues for us. Greek democracy, more specifically Athenian democracy was more selective as to who could vote, only adult males. But the catch was that you MUST vote. Today we have the "luxury" of not voting if so desired. At the very least, both governments gave the power to the citizens, or who they thought a citizen was. Martin Rivera Alliance.
